Run the Runway is back for 2024! Come run a 5k right on the runway at the Fort McMurray Airport!

Starting at the North Terminal Apron (Old Terminal building), we'll run out onto the taxiway, turn left onto the runway, circle an airport fire truck at the end, run all the way back down the runway, around another firetruck, then back to the start point.

Due to runway closure limitations, all participants must be able to complete the event in under 50 minutes. Anyone who hasn't passed the taxiway we start on after 25 minutes will be redirected to the apron.

Strollers are permitted, however are required to be running strollers with wheels at least 9" in diameter. This is to allow for emergency evacuation of the runway through the uneven grassy infield in the event of an aircraft needing the runway for an emergency landing. Runners age limit is minimum 14 years old, younger kids permitted in strollers only. No bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, etc. are permitted.

The race starts at 09:00 Sept 7. Check in opens at 08:00. Registrants must be on site and checked in for a mandatory safety briefing at 08:45. There is no room for anyone to be late, if you are late, you will not be able to run. There is a time limit of 50 minutes to complete the run, anyone unable to complete the first half within 25 minutes will be redirected to the start point. These time limitations are not negotiable as we only have the runway access for a brief period of time, if we don’t respect the timelines and rules, we’ll lose the opportunity to run on the runway for future years.

No dogs or other animals are permitted to attend the event as participants or spectators as it takes place inside the secure airport perimeter.
